Review - Spider-man Homecoming 6" Action Figures by Hasbro

Spider-man has a new movie coming out this year and you know what that means, new toys! I was out at Toys “R” Us last week and stumbled upon pegs stuffed full of Hasbro’s kid oriented budget line of Homecoming figures so I grabbed a few. I believe there are 4 different figures in the first wave: Spider-man, Homemade suit Spider-man, Vulture, and a Tech-suit Spider-man which is a blue variant of the standard Spidey. I picked up the first three figures and will be taking a look at them today.

The PACKAGING of these guys is pretty simple, and fits in with Hasbros Ultimate Spider-man, Avengers, and Guardians basic figure lines. I’m not a huge fan of the stubby card back, when I was a kid cards had lots of head room, but these get the job done. They show off the figures nicely and have some nice promo art up top alongside the Homecoming logo. The back of the card has a little blurb about the character and shows off the other figures in the line. At the end of the day it gets the job done, but it’s nothing special.

I was actually surprised by the SCULPTS of these figures, they’re not half bad. Spider-man has some nice detail throughout his costume, lots of fine textures. The only problem I have with Spidey is the size of his head, it’s a little small. Especially when compared to the homemade suit version. It does give him more heroic proportions but come on, he’s still in high school. Vulture looks great, tons of detailing in his wings and mechanical talons. The wings are on the smaller side, especially compared to the on-screen look of the character. But I think they look fine for a budget line.

The Homemade suit Spidey figure is probably my least favorite of the three, but he looks good too. Nice wrinkles in the costume, with a very fine texture to the hoodie. The webbing on his hands is raised as well, and there are some fine little details in his web shooters. He’s still an all right figure, and looks to be a pretty important look for Spidey in the film.

Now here’s the weird thing about these bad boys, the SCALE. Everywhere online these guys are listed at a 6 inch scale, but they all ring in well below 6 inches. Both Spider-men are about 5.5 inches tall and Vulture stands at about 5.75 inches. Now I don’t have any figures from any of the other basic Marvel lines so I have nothing to compare them to, so I’m of two minds about the whole thing. One, in Homecoming Peter Parker is in high school and is possibly still growing. Also, Michael Keaton is also notoriously a little short so just maybe they are actually sort of accurately scaled. And TWO, they’re just in a weird 5.5” scale so they don’t fit in with Hasbro’s Spider-man 3 line and they don’t fit in with the Marvel Legends scale so you have to rebuy everything in this weird in between scale. Thanks Hasbro.

Moving on, the PAINT on these guys is pretty minimal but clean. Both Spider-men have pretty clean cut lines on their costumes, and the spider logo on the homemade suit looks great. The raised webbing on the hands is painted black and is nice and clean too. The lines are a little fuzzy between the hand and the web shooter but it’s not a big deal. My figure also has some blue chips on the back of his left leg. My only problem with the paint work on the Spidey figures is that the bottoms of their feet aren’t painted. Spider-man is also missing some black on his boots but I’m not too bothered by it.

The paint on Vulture is pretty good too, no major slop but the colors have been simplified. Especially with the straps across his chest. The wings look good when you are looking at them from the front, but are completely unpainted on the back. Again, in the context of this being a budget line for kids, not bad at all.

The ARTICULATION on these guys follows the same trend as the paint, basic. Both Spider-man figures come in at a whopping 9 points of articulation. They’ve got ball jointed necks, shoulders, elbows and knees with swivel hips. All the joints are nice and tight and have about as much range of movement as you’d expect. The elbows are a little restricted though, you can’t quite get the forearm to a 90 degree angle with the bicep.

Vulture gets the short end of the stick in this category, he’s only got 5 POA and I have no idea why. At first I thought the leg sculpt would make it hard to incorporate a knee joint in there, but there is a perfect spot for it. I guess it could be because Spider-man is known for his physicality and they wanted to get as much as they could in there and scale back on Vulture. Or maybe his wings have something to do with it and there was a trade-off between articulation and plastic. Anyways, he’s got a ball jointed neck and shoulders with swivel hips. The neck isn’t restricted with the fur collar but with the style of ball joint he was never going to be able to look straight up.

There is nothing really noteworthy to talk about with the ACCESSORIES. Spider-man comes with a dumb missile firing gun that you can attach to his arm. The Homemade suit Spider-man is a little better and comes with a web line that is made out of a rubbery material. Vulture of course comes with his wings which come in 2 pieces and just pop into his back with pegs. I don’t really consider the wings accessories because they are so integral to the costume and look of the character (we’ll talk about the Marvel Legends Build-an-accessory at a later date).

Overall I think these figures are a really great value. Nice sculpts, with clean paint, and decent articulation all for $9.99 (CAN), you can’t beat it. Sure the scale is a bit wonky, and most collectors will scoff at them, but I look forward to more MCU figures in this style. At least they’re easier to get your hands on than the Marvel Legends figures will be.
